Taming the Female Body

How women have been bound, broken, shrouded, and hobbled in the name of social hierarchy and propriety, status, religion, and beauty: witches' bridles, burqas, female seclusion. Binding the body: neck, chest, waist, feet, whether by "cruel shoes" or heavy brass rings that cannot be removed. Cutting off of women's sexual parts (no, not only genital excision someplace far away: surgical "labial reductions," unnecessary hysterectomies, and dangerous "gastric bypass" operations). Anorexia or fattening houses; plucking, shaving, toxic cosmetics; psychiatric electroshock, cold baths, insulin shock "therapy," and drugging disproportionately administered to women.
